Description
Birmingham Guild of Handicraft Pewter Pendant Light
A rare example, this large pendant light is made of pewter which was an extremely unusual material to use (in the original catalogue it was described as being made of copper and brass). This has led us to believe that this piece could have been commissioned for an extremely wealthy customer or possibly a royal household.
The pewter shade has a hammered finish and features a perforated brass ring in the mid section. This light would originally have had a small shade shielding the bulb finished with a metal bead. We have had a small shade fitted to a ring to replicate the original.
The moto of the Birmingham Guild was ‘By Hammer and Hand’ Examples of their lighting can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each piece is simple in design displaying expert metalworking skills. A sketch of the original pendant light in the catalogue can be seen in the photo gallery. Desicribed as Electric Pendant No. 2.
Bearing the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft stamp BHG on the inside close to the bulb holder. See photo.
